Mom Hits Halfcourt Shot To Win Scholarship For Her Daughter

Minnesota seems to get the craziest basketball stories. There was the high-school kid who made a game-winning shot while lying on his back, and now there's the tale of Angela Ramey and her daughter Grace.

Grace, 9, attends Bethany Academy in Bloomington, and raised the most donations in the school's Kids Against Hunger campaign, which serves local food shelves. Her prize was a few cracks at a halfcourt shot–if she made it, she'd win half a year of tuition. After a couple of attempts fell short, Angela tried the ol' granny-style heave ho. She missed badly, but the ball had enough momentum that it bounced on the floor and ended up going in. The reaction is priceless. Check it out above. Way to go, Rameys.

Royals Win ALCS, Superfan Paul Rudd Invites People To Party At His Mom's House

The underdog Royals are fast becoming America's team--not only did they reach the playoffs for the first time in 29 years, they've swept their opponents in exciting fashion to make it to the World Series. So it's only fitting that Paul Rudd, America's actor (or something like that), is a big superfan of the team. And he gave a wild postgame interview after Kansas City clinched the American League. Apparently none of the Royals were available.

31 Days of Calvin and Hobbes: Day 4

As a six-year-old, Calvin certainly has a wild imagination. He often pictures himself as a dinosaur terrorizing the earth, and of course he's got his other identities, like Spaceman Spiff and Tracer Bullet.

Of course, that imagination can get him into trouble. On more than one occasion, he just does something because he's interested in seeing what happens. This is one such case. Whacking nails into a coffee table can provide very little good for anyone, other than a small child satiating his or her curiosity. When Calvin's mom runs over in horror (as any mother would), Calvin doesn't understand why she doesn't understand what he's up to, and why she doesn't support it. It's great.

31 Days of Calvin and Hobbes: Day 1

Calvin and Hobbes is, without a doubt, the best cartoon ever made. I don't care what other comics you like; if you don't have C&H in the #1 spot, you're just wrong. Plain and simple.

Fortunately, Bill Watterson gave us a good decade's worth of imagination, wit, cynicism, and just about every other kind of emotion you can imagine. And as I enter my birth month and inch even further from childhood, I wanted to put up a cartoon each day for the next 31 days, along with a little commentary on it. Of course, I own none of these comics, and all of the work belongs to Watterson.

Our first entry demonstrates how Watterson masterfully could tell an entire story without using a single word. Calvin just wants to go play outside, but his dad is too busy working. After a little while, the dad realizes his priorities were backwards, and he goes to make things right. Calvin's often antagonizing his father, and his dad on more than one occasion has remarked the family should have gotten a dog instead of a son. Deep down, though, the love is there, and it's beautifully rendered in heart-warming fashion.
